Cranberry Seed

What is Cranberry Seed?

One of only three commercially-grown fruits that are native to North America, along with the blueberry and the Concord grape, the cranberry is hailed as “America’s original superfruit.” Native Americans used cranberries as early as 1550, eating them fresh or mixing them with wild game and fat to create pemmican, a winter food ration. They also used the brightly colored berries to dye fabric and as in their medicinal practice. By 1620, the native tribes had taught pilgrims how to incorporate the berries into their diet, and within the century, settlers had begun producing cranberry juice for consumption. In 1871, the first association of cranberry growers was formed, and cultivation began at a larger scale.

Benefits of Cranberry Seed

Cranberries have incredible health benefits, and are especially high in polyphenols, which are compounds that promote the health of the heart, urinary tract system, blood vessels, and stomach. If that weren’t enough, these small red berries are also a great source of fiber, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, beta-carotene, lutein, zea-xanthin, folate and minerals like potassium and manganese. Studies show that cranberries are anti-inflammatory and that eating them may have a few key benefits:

  • Help increase levels of good cholesterol
  • Help lower bad cholesterol
  • Boost the immune system
