What is Spirulina?

Spirulina is a blue-green microalgae that grows naturally in salty lakes and oceans in subtropical climates. Sixteenth century Aztecs gathered spirulina from Lake Texcoco in Mexico and used it for its high nutritional value. As early as the ninth century and continuing through present day, spirulina has been harvested from Lake Chad in west-central Africa to be made into dry cakes that are sold at markets or used in cooking.

Benefits of Spirulina

Aside from being rich in protein, spirulina is full of magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium and B vitamins. The heart-healthy microalgae has been shown to have some truly amazing benefits:
